Now settled in Plymouth, Caroline Munhead (or Mrs Bird as she is becoming known) begins 1930 with the same desire as many British people that year: to find employment. The Depression is biting the country hard. For some, children are an expensive luxury in such difficult times; for others they are the reward for patience. Caroline and Max’s resolve not to have children of their own is tested to extremes, as are Caroline’s friendships.
